Ever wonder how a baseball bat is made? If so, this video will show you how it is done. When I watched the video I was somewhat surprised the baseball bat was not made from start to finish by automation. I expected to see a blank piece of wood put on the lathe and a finished bat to emerge but as you can see the final steps are done by hand. The top woods used for baseball bats used by professional baseball are maple and white ash while most college teams use aluminum bats. I've used an aluminum bat before and I did not like the feel when you connect with the baseball. I was especially impressed by the fact this bat in the video has a hand done finish applied. With the way the MLB players break bats I imagine the top baseball bat producers are kept very busy during the season.
If you have a woodworking shop with a lathe you might want to try your hand at turning a piece of maple or white ash into a baseball bat for your kid's or yourself.
